The art of marquetry dates back to Florence in the 16th century when the Medicis were the main patrons of this refined art. Their work attracted jealous attention from European courts throughout Europe including the Habsburgs in Prague, the Bourbons in Naples and Madrid, and of course, Louis XIV in Paris.
